@rick open source is valuable! i'm not 100% sure how much i care about federation in a community chat application though, and my prior experience running a server (both about a year ago and literally two days ago) has been pretty rough, honestly. wish i could say otherwise!
matrix users, what do you like most about the platform? i want to keep an open mind here and see it for its merits, and see if i can work through my personal gripes.
i think the sad truth here is that matrix just isn't built for discord refugees. and beyond that, while discord was dominating the market, nobody was out here building a solid competitor that isn't just another discord ripoff
in case anyone's curious on my matrix introduction so far: - set up continuwuity (i previously hosted a conduit instance a while back) - account created, first space and rooms set up - add secondary test account - message invites just don't send - ??? this persists after db wipes btw
@julia i know a bunch of people who don't want to pay for an individual plan, but would happily pool into a group plan. there's so much wasted opportunity for profit (i thought companies were obsessed with that?)
@halva yeah...my personal observation: fedi has majority queer nerds, so most discourse revolves around queerness. atproto has the tech nerds, so most discourse revolves around the tech. the latter means that generally, tech discourse gets the most heated, and folks who do unfavourable things with the tech get treated like monsters for no good reason
@halva she literally called him a "hack" for implementing features on blacksky that work exclusively outside the atproto network- i believe for followers-only posts, which blacksky's community deeply desired, and atproto very much Does Not Support out of the box
this is like if a fedi instance implemented a feature outside of the activitypub protocol (as i hear, this happens all the fckn time on fedi), someone called them out for breaking activitypub compatibility, and that someone was then lambasted as being transphobic or some shit
