actively choosing to implement activitypub in your application is like going to a park, seeing a dead body laying outside, and continuing to walk right on in
@Lugrim the whole idea is that identity could be pinned to an independent provider, akin to how we sign up to fedi instances. for example, i could be @[email protected] on the app.
as a bonus, changes to said identity would be cryptographically signed with a private key stored on-device, so you could theoretically move to another provider for the low cost of resyncing your devices
new LIVE schedule for this week, and it starts. uh. RIGHT NOW!! we're kicking off the week with more TRUCKING, then more NieR: Automata on wednesday and saturday!! 💫 💚
@socks you use matrix in a similar way i would expect to, neat! (i only feel the need for encrypted chats on rare occasions, notably for direct messaging)
fwiw, the E2E device setup has been one of the smoothest parts for me- i can't seem to message another account on my own instance, even on a fresh install 😭
@rick@Lugrim personally, the model i'd advocate for is a lot more like teamspeak's client/server model, with the open-source touch for good measure. you can bring your own client, connect to any server that speaks the language, and all of these servers are self-contained instances which host only their own data. this prioritises the community instant-messaging aspect that i admire discord for.
(as a funny aside: if it weren't for the "instant-messaging" criteria, i would just start up a forum, LOL)
@rick@Lugrim i've also seen the weight and complexity of federation first-hand from hosting this very activitypub instance and others before it. state fragmentation is mentioned later in the thread which is one of my key concerns.
if a server goes down, it makes very little sense to me for the rooms to persist on other clients. what if it was permanently shut down? now you have ghost spaces forever. even if it wasn't, i'm not too concerned about patiently waiting for the server to come back up before sending my message- we already have this on discord on occasion and we've all navigated it pretty fine.
@rick@stefan mentioned in another reply, but i'm not sure how i feel about leaning on functionality not supported by all server and client implementations
well, i actually do know how i feel about that, because it happens all the time on fedi- i find it very annoying to deal with.
