last night i learned that SFTP network shares are phenomenally well-supported on linux compared to the samba shares i was using before. and it's a bit more performant than SMB. and i get to use my super-secure SSH keys to authenticate!
needless to say, i am very, very happy with this information. may actually uninstall samba from my server soon ;p
