@rick @Lugrim i've also seen the weight and complexity of federation first-hand from hosting this very activitypub instance and others before it. state fragmentation is mentioned later in the thread which is one of my key concerns.
if a server goes down, it makes very little sense to me for the rooms to persist on other clients. what if it was permanently shut down? now you have ghost spaces forever. even if it wasn't, i'm not too concerned about patiently waiting for the server to come back up before sending my message- we already have this on discord on occasion and we've all navigated it pretty fine.
