a lot of the discourse i've seen, particularly on fedi, ignites because of one or both sides not fully understanding what the other is talking about.
i find it's much easier to acknowledge you don't fully understand what you're talking about, and interrogate what you feel is missing in the conversation. you'd be amazed how much you can learn, and how many fires you'll avoid.
maintaining good-faith also makes your argument look a lot better (i.e. read carefully and don't misrepresent what they're saying; you instantly lose points for this)
