@kopper i remember being too tired last night to understand why none of this made sense, and then realised it's because this guide uses HAproxy, and i don't. LOL
the basic idea i get is "let requests timeout after 10 or so seconds; set a hard queue limit for requests so the server doesn't get hammered." makes sense! i'll look into this for nginx later.
