@lumi i would argue that matrix and xmpp have less privacy than signal?? you're relying on your instance admin being a good host and not prying on your unencrypted room messages, or taking the burden upon yourself and hosting your own instance on your own, very much identifiable domain.
at least with signal, i don't believe they even store your profile data on the server, besides temporary caching for device sync.
also i've discussed the matrix ecosystem with a bunch of folks and the collective opinion seems to be "they make too much money to ever separate from element or do much of anything to improve the ecosystem"
@lumi i'm not entirely sure how signal's architecture would support full decentralisation, and the phone number requirement is likely to prevent spam accounts from being generated by the millions. they've made some very careful tradeoffs to get what they have and i think they're very fair ones.
what you may be asking for here is a kind of E2EE IRC, which afaik does not exist yet (and ergo would have to start from scratch), and would put a heavy burden on relays that need to forward n+1 anonymous packets around indiscriminately.

@lumi ah, that's fair. for what it's worth, phone number, IP address, and login dates are like the only things signal actually store on you- they have a public list of government subpoenas they've received, and in all cases that's the maximum extent of what they've been able to hand over. everything else is E2EE and primarily stored on-device.
of all the chat apps out there, i trust signal the most.
