@MarkAssPandi @julia in my case, i am building a CMS, but i'll also get full (albeit one-time) control over URLs (with database prodding i could change it at any time, but i'm not making it a UI feature to discourage breaking links)

i think the -yyyy suffix for annual posts makes a lot of sense in my case, and also enables me to continue making one-off posts that don't have the year attached (because the year doesn't need to be attached)

i think personal preference and actual use-case trumps here, so perhaps the flat article ID would work fine for me :3

this way, i can easily post /blog/this-is-a-post and /blog/top-10-posts-of-2025 without necessarily being locked into anything. if i ever wanted to adopt an ID suffix for a laugh, i could always just add it myself when reserving the post ID! (this would be acceptable because i do not expect this to be a common use-case)

@julia my issue then would be "what should the ID be?"

i have a personal ick against incrementing IDs that are visible to the user. a random ID could work at the cost of sleekness (imo), but i'm sure i'd also spend forever looking for a random ID algorithm that doesn't upset me more LOL

the second option, dated links, would probably also show a directory of related articles if you visited the year/month directly.

i.e. /blog/2025/ would show you all articles from 2025, and /blog/2025/01 would show you everything from january of that year

the idea would be that the first option, immutable post IDs, would be customised by me at the date of posting, and never altered (or at least redirected to new location if necessary).

name collisions would probably be handled by a warning when i try to create the post, where i could probably just append a -202X or something to the end (if i'm posting two articles with the same name in one year, i have a different kind of problem altogether)

do y'all prefer having dates in your URLs, or just an immutable post ID? examples below:

now i just need a more permanent place to document stuff like this. gee, if only i had like, a blog page that i had finished, and totally isn't currently half-implemented and sitting on the backburner while i'm focused on other stuff.....
