they definitely do ask before collecting anything, it's entirely opt-in, and they seem keen on keeping people posted ahead of time if they change what data they collect and how.

@Etch9 i am aware of the ways that muse group are interested in monetising audacity, and it doesn't appear to be the core software itself. they show interest in creating a marketplace for effects and instruments, and potentially cloud storage for projects. these are all things you can totally ignore, though.
i'd understand hard-forking at a point where they actually start decimating the core software, but that's not what seems to be happening here.
@yassie_j@freyalikesgirls yeah, it's not no tracking, but it's (imo) barely worth mentioning. i wouldn't consider it "creepy" by any means. if anything, it's information that i tend to happily volunteer these days because i increasingly rely on indie/open-source software that could really do with the data.
@freyalikesgirls a long while back, i recall extreme privacy nerds flipping their lid over audacity 4 adding a randomly-generated tracking ID for diagnostic purposes. that's literally all it exists for, though: it's a UUID to keep track of daily/monthly active users and track retention rates.
it's at least more maintained than moshidon. i can't fault that at all, though- that's basically a one-man fork, and maintaining a codebase like that can't be easy
that said, there's a decent number of commits in 2026 but the last release build was last june 😭
i mean in general that mastodon v5 look is really lip-biting but that's one of the biggest pain points that would genuinely fck with how i communicate on fedi
