managed to recover the directories, no thanks to nextcloud.

i hadn't finished pulling all my files off onedrive, so these legacy projects still remained intact there.

everything is moving to my external drive, from which i intend to backup directly to my NAS from now on.

@byte i'm so completely fucking done with this awful software. i can't even give allowances to the developers because this kind of embarrassing shit has been happening with their software across the several years i've been using it

here's another awesome update:

20 project directories, dating back before early 2023, now appear as 0KB with no files- only the directory structures remain.

if you claim to be a cloud platform, data loss like this should be a fucking embarrassment.
this is not the first time this has happened.

@luana @r0se shoutout porn vault (i relegate that to another account so i don't flashbang myself when opening up the media tab on main)

@r0se given i use an external drive to hold a lot of my music production libraries anyways, i'm likely gonna migrate my ongoing projects to there, and treat cloud storage as more of an archive

@r0se @luana ah, yes i am- sorry i wasn't factoring in webdav here (that also doesn't work on my setup for super awesome reasons i have not figured out yet)

the virtual files i'm referring to are literally 0B stubs for the actual file that nextcloud resolves into a regular file on request. they're native to both windows and macOS in some capacity, but linux has no alternative for this atm

@aperture @julia ...what am i talking about?? well like, what's the point of...gestures vaguely...whatever this is, then?

@r0se @luana minor correction on the nextcloud client: assuming you're using virtual files, the file may exist only on the server and not on the client. that said, VFS support is okay on windows, spotty as hell on macOS (it hacks the icloud VFS backend iirc), and non-existent on linux (unless you like .nextcloud stub files everywhere)

these problem likely wouldn't be solved by other solutions, but so long as it's more stable then i'd be happy

@julia i like to imagine this is an internal flag, like how stores have "do not serve" lists

@julia so you see class, here we have demonstrated two axioms of the universe: that julia is gorgeous, and that she says "shut up" whenever she's called out on something truthful

@igwigg fwiw, if you're in the EU area (particularly anywhere nearby germany), thomann has some pretty nice options for music/audio gear! personally been buying my stuff from them since i got properly invested into making music :)

@r0se ooh yeah ente!! photos are something i don't really need to make file shares for (even if i did, i can just as securely copy the photos i want into a share if necessary). definitely need to give that a look!

@r0se oh yeah, the plan was also to build my own sync client, dw LOL

the biggest pain after that would probably be mobile apps, as photo syncing is another thing i frequently do with my current setup

@igwigg anything branding itself "audiophile-grade" is worth raising an eyebrow at, imo. whereas it's pretty sound logic that if you pick up stuff actually used by musicians, chances are you're gonna hear it like the musicians did affirmative

@r0se i mean, the idea was to have it all accessible via webDAV anyways, so it would be accessed over HTTP regardless. all i'd need to do from there is build a web interface for when the client requests text/html or smth. the data would be encrypted until read via authorised HTTP endpoints.
