@destiny i don't believe discord is powerful enough to just break the law ;p
i'm not happy with them rolling this out to jurisdictions before they're legally mandated to either, fwiw. my devil's advocate is merely that they're trying to keep up a good look for governments so they don't get too harshly Looked Into
@destiny i've commented a lot on lingering concerns in my crosspost on bluesky, but in brief:
discord are legally obligated to do this, or likely will be in your jurisdiction sooner or later. i think they've done what they can to make it as comfortable as possible (most platforms are just going straight for the nearest age verification provider they can google), and this article notes a lot of the ways they've tried to achieve that (stricter privacy thresholds, transparency on providers used, commitment to giving users more than one provider to choose from, etc.)
if you want discord to roll back, the simple answer is they can't. they legally cannot do that. they will be shut down. the best way to prevent this stuff from happening on discord, or any other platform you care about, is to CALL YOUR REPS 🗣️ 🔥 ‼️ and tell them you don't want these creepy, thinly-veiled surveillance laws to pass under the guise of "child safety". make it clear that supporting such bills will alienate a large portion of their constituents, whom they need to stay in power.
@mica ooh, actually that could have been exFAT. despite being the only cross-platform filesystem capable of >32bit addressing, i've heard some unnerving concerns about exFAT's stability (or at least its support on some operating systems).
@ww@julia@mica never used macOS passwords so hard for me to comment, but yeah i'm not super surprised apple would let their FAT driver fall to the wayside, despite that being one of two cross-platform filesystems they actually support...
new discord blog post was a good read, highly recommend. i have more thoughts than can fit into even a small thread, but my feelings are overall positive. thanks for the transparency, y'all!
